The 89th Academy Awards ceremony last night was capped off by a shocking twist ending. La La Land [A7PLAL] was mistakenly named Best Picture before Moonlight [A7PMON] was revealed as the real winner due to a screw-up with the envelope. The fiasco overshadowed a major upset in the Best Picture category. La La Land had been the prohibitive favorite by everyone including the trading results on the AwardOptions of the Oscar nominees on the Hollywood Stock Exchange.
HSX did correctly named the Best Director winner Damien Chazelle for La La Land [A7DDCH] as well as the Best Actress winner Emma Stone for La La Land [A7CEST].
The Oscar for Best Actor went to Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea [A7AMBT], who had been the frontrunner on HSX, until Denzel Washington – Fences [A7ADWA] overtook him during the last week of trading.
HSX accurately forecasted the Oscar winners in both supporting categories: Mahershala Ali – Moonlight [A7RMAL] for Best Supporting Actor and the Viola Davis – Fences [A7SVDA] for Best Supporting Actress.
HSX also picked Moonlight [A7EMON] to win Best Adapted Screenplay and Manchester by the Sea [A7OMBT] to prevail in Best Original Screenplay.
Overall, the AwardOptions successfully predicted the Oscar winners in 6 out of the 8 major categories this year.
