The year 2020 kicks off with only one new release at the box office, as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker [STAR9] is poised to three-peat at the top. Despite a bigger New Year’s Day gross, The Rise of Skywalker has fallen behind the pace of The Last Jedi and will not overtake its predecessor. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker may settle for $35 million during its third weekend.
Jumanji: The Next Level [JUMN2] continues to hold strong and looks to score another $20 million.
With excellent word of mouth and award buzz, Little Women [LTLWM] should be able to maintain 70% of its opening weekend for another $12 million.
The Grudge [GRUD4] is this year’s horror offering to start the new year. Sony reboots the J-horror series with a R-rating. A year ago, the PG-13 rated Insidious: The Last Key surprised with a $29.6 million opening. However, that fourth film came two and a half years after Insidious: Chapter Three. The Grudge 2 was the last one to open in theaters in October 2006 with $20.8 million. Too many years have passed for those fans to return. Appearing in 2642 theaters, The Grudge could crawl away with $11 million.
Targeted at families still on holiday break, Spies in Disguise [PIGEN] may hold 65% of its debut for a second weekend at $8.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
