Spun off from the Shrek franchise, DreamWorks Animation's Puss in Boots [PUSNB] earned an estimated $34 million to easily win the weekend box office. Although it would set a new mark for Halloween weekend topping Saw III's $33.6 million, the opening fell short of expectations. Without competition for family films, Puss in Boots should enjoy a long run.
Last week's champ Paranormal Activity 3 [PNAC3] tumbled 65% to $18.5 million. The low-budget horror sequel has banked $81.3 million.
In Time [NTIME] punched in with $12 million to debut in third place. The sci-fi film attracted an older crowd that was 58% over the age of 25.
The Rum Diary [RUMDI] drank up $5.0 million, which was good enough for fifth place.
