Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince [HPOT6] summoned an estimated $79.5 million over the weekend on its way to $159.7 million over its first five days at the box office. That topped Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which conjured up a five-day total of $139.7 million two years ago. Fans had given the fantasy sequel the best Wednesday opening day ever, beating even Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen [TFRM2]. However, the teen wizard didn’t come close to the robots’ five-day record haul of $201 million. Because of a late scheduling change, the PG-rated film did not have the benefit of higher priced IMAX screens that are showing Transformers.
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs [ICEA3] is the bridesmaid for the third week in a row. The CG animated sequel collected $17.7 million to advance its total to $152.0 million.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ranked third at $13.8 million. The robots in disguise have now banked $363.9 million.
Last weekend’s champ Bruno [BRUNO] took a pratfall, tumbling 73% from its debut to fourth place with $8.4 million. The Austrian provocateur has shocked its way to $49.6 million.
