The fourth film in Sony's vampires and werewolves series Underworld: Awakening [UNDW4] grossed an estimated$25.4 million. The audience skewed older males while 3D accounted for 59% of the business.
Red Tails [REDTL] debuted in second place with a better than expected $19.1 million. The WWII actioner attracted an audience that was 66% over the age of 25.
Last week's top film Contraband [CNTRB] finished third at $12.2 million, dropping 50% from its opening weekend.
In its first weekend of wide release, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close [ELAIC] took in $10.5 million. The drama appealed to older moviegoers with 82% over the age of 25.
Haywire [HAYWR] earned $9.0 million to open in fifth place. The action film was poorly received and looks to fade quickly.
