Young moviegoers return to the theaters before the Super Bowl as Chronicle [CHRNC] earned an estimated $22.0 million to finish atop the weekend box office. The found footage film about kids abusing their superpowers attracted an audience that was 61% under the age of 25 and 55% male.
The Woman in Black [WMBLK] debuted a close second with $21.0 million. The supernatural horror brought out a crowd that was 57% under the age of 25 and 59% female.
Last week's top film The Grey [TGREY] dropped 52% to $9.5 million in its second weekend.
Big Miracle [BMRCL] opened fourth overall at $8.5 million. Surprisingly, the demographic for the saving whales tale skewed very young women at 68% female and 67% under 25.
