Moviegoers flocked to theaters as all four new wide openers grossed more than $20 million to pace a best non-holiday weekend ever in February. The Vow [THVOW] topped the weekend box office with an estimated $41.7 million. The romance attracted an audience that was 72% female as expected.
Safe House [SAFEH] debuted in the second spot at $39.3 million, the second best opening for Denzel Washington [DWASH] behind The American Gangster. The thriller drew an older crowd.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Travels [MYSTR] finished third with $27.6 million . 74% of the audience saw the sequel in 3D.
The 3D re-release of Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace [SW13D] banked $23.0 million in take fourth overall.
Last week's top film Chronicle [CHRNC] declined 44% to $12.3 million.
