On the eve of the Academy Awards, real-life Navy SEALs stormed the weekend box office as Act of Valor [AOVAL] debuted in first place with an estimated $24.7 million. The military recruitment film turned feature release attracted an audience that was over 70% male.
Tyler Perry's Good Deeds [GDEED] finished second at $16.0 million. As expected, the drama drew older women with 85% over the age of 25.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island [MYSTR] moved up to third place with $13.5 million. The 3D film has grossed $76.7 million after 3 weeks.
The weekend's other two new wide openers hardly made a dent. The comedy Wanderlust [WLUST] earned $6.6 million, while the thriller Gone [GONE] managed just $5 million.
