On a night honoring the year’s best in filmmaking, two films celebrating filmmaking tied with the most Oscars at the 84th Academy Awards. The black & white silent film The Artist won the biggest prize Best Picture among its five awards. Hugo also won five, all in the craft and technical categories.
Traders correctly forecasted the winner from seven out of the eight major categories. The Artist [A2PART] was the overwhelming favorite for Best Picture as was Michel Hazanavicius [A2DMHA] for Best Director and Jean Dujardin [A2AJDU] for Best Actor.
In a mild surprise, Meryl Streep [A2CMST] won Best Actress for The Iron Lady, her third Oscar. Traders and most Hollywood were expecting Viola Davis to take home the prize for The Help.
Christopher Plummer [A2RCPL] became the oldest winner for acting at 82 for his supporting role in Beginners. Octavia Spencer [A2SOSP] won Best Supporting Actress for The Help.
Traders also rightly predicted the winners in the screenplay categories. Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash [A2EDSC] won for adapting The Descendants. Woody Allen [A2OMNP] won in absence for his original screenplay Midnight in Paris.
