Outperforming even the loftious expectations, the superhero team-up The Avengers [AVNGR] banked $200.3 million to claim the biggest opening weekend of all times. The previous mark of $169 million was set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II just last year. 52% of the moviegoers paid for 3D. The audience was split 50% under the age of 25, and 60% male. With phenomenal word of mouth, The Avengers may not be frontloaded like most blockbuster openings.
Think Like a Man [TLKAM] finished second adding $8.0 million to bring its total to $73 million.
Pirates! Band of Misfits [PIRTS] and The Five-Year Engagement [5YENG] both dropped 52% in their second weekend to $5.4 million and $5.1 million, respectively.
