Topping the box office for a third straight weekend, The Dark Knight Rises [BATM3] took in an estimated $36.4 million, a 41% decline from the previous weekend. The concluding chapter in the Batman trilogy now totals $354.6 million.
Total Recall [RECAL] debuted in second place with a lackluster $26.0 million. The sci-fi remake attracted primarily older male moviegoers. Poor reviews and word of mouth are likely to erase any long-term prospects.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days [WIMP3] also disappointed with a $14.7 million opening at the third spot. With kids still out of school for the summer, the family film should be able to maintain legs at the box office.
In its fourth weekend of release, Ice Age: Continental Drift [ICEA4] finished fourth at $8.4 million to advance its total to $131.9 million.
Rounding out the top five, The Watch [NEIBW] dropped 50% in its second weekend to $6.4 million.
