After a couple of underperforming weekends at the box office, The Bourne Legacy [BORN4] met expectation with an estimated $40.3 million to dethrone The Dark Knight Rises [BATM3] for first place. The spin-off sequel brought back older fans of the spy franchise with 70% of the audience over the age of 30.
The Campaign [CMPGN] took in $27.4 million to debut in second place. The political comedy attracted a crowd that was64% over the age of 25.
After three weeks at the top, The Dark Knight Rises finished third with $19.5 million, bringing its total to $390.1 million.
Hope Springs [GHSPR] opened fourth with $15.6 million over the weekend and $20.0 million since opening on Wednesday. As expected, the relationship comedy drew predominantly older women, which should provide the film with good legs.
Between the two sophomore films, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days [WIMP3] declined 44% to $8.2 million while Total Recall [RECAL] tumbled 68% to $8.1 million.
