Even though the sequel packed more starpower than the first film, The Expendables 2 [XPND2] banked an estimated $28.75 million, short of the original's $34.8 million opening two years ago. The R-rated action film expectantly attracted an audience that was 63% male and 65% over the age of 25.
Last weekend's champ The Bourne Legacy [BORN4] captured $17.0 million, dropping 55% in its second weekend.
The animated ParaNorman [PNORM] debuted in third place with $14.0 million. Focus Features' widest release came up short of Coraline's $16.8 million opening.
The Campaign [CMPGN] tailed off 50% in its second weekend to $13.4 million.
Sparkle [SPRKL] opened fifth overall at $12.0 million. The musical drama skewed female at 74%, while 62% were over the age of 35.
The Odd Life of Timothy Green [OLOTG] finished seventh with $10.9 million. The family film has grossed $15.2 million since opening on Wednesday.
