Horror fans turned out during the long Labor Day Weekend and put Lionsgate's The Possession [TPOSN] atop the weekend box office with an estimated $21.3 million from Friday to Monday. The opening is the second highest for the holiday weekend behind Halloween's $30.6 million in 2007. The audience was 59% female and 54% under the age of 25.
Lawless [LWLES] debuted in second place with $13.0 million over the 4-day weekend and $15.2 million since opening on Wednesday. The period crime drama attracted a crowd that was 54% male and 67% over the age of 25.
After a two-week reign, The Expendables 2 [XPND2] finished third at $11.2 million to bring its cumulative total to $68.6 million. The Bourne Legacy [BORN4] placed fourth with $9.4 million to advance its gross to $98.4 million.
The Oogieloves in The Big Balloon Adventure [OGILV] earned only $0.6 million over the long weekend from 2160 theaters.
