In a battle of dueling 3D wide releases film, the fifth installment in the sci-fi series Resident Evil: Retribution [RESE5] prevailed with an estimated $20.6 million. The opening is the smallest in the franchise since the first film debuted with $17.7 million in 2002. The sequel connected with its fanbase that was 64% male and 55% over the age of 25.
The re-release of Finding Nemo 3D [NEM3D] finished second with $17.5 milion, well-below pre-release expectations. The Pixar re-release performed more like Beauty and the Beast 3D in January than The Lion King 3D a year ago.
After 2 weeks at number one, The Possession [TPOSN] dropped to third place at $5.8 million. The horror film has earned $41.2 million thus far.
