Three new films opened on Christmas Day to booming business, but The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey [HOBIT] prevailed over the weekend with an estimated $32.9 million. The first part of the trilogy has banked $222.7 million after 3 weekends.
Debuting in second place, Django Unchained [DJANG] shot up $30.7 million over the weekend. Quentin Tarantino’s southern western has already earned $64.0 million since opening on Tuesday.
Les Miserables [LESMS] took the third spot with $28.0 million over the weekend. The musical has scored $67.5 million in its first 6 days.
Parental Guidance [PGUID] grossed $14.8 million over the weekend to rank fourth overall. The family film has taken in $29.6 million since Christmas Day.
Jack Reacher [1SHOT] declined just 10% to $14.0 million in its second weekend, while This is 40 [TIS40] increased 14% to $13.2 million.
Expanding wide to 745 theaters, Silver Linings Playbook [SLINB] tallied $4.1 million to bring its total to $27.4 million.
