Although showing signs of franchise fatigue, the fifth John McClane actioner A Good Day to Die Hard [DIEH5] still led the President’s Day weekend box office with an estimated $29.3 million for the four-day holiday period, and $37.5 million since opening on Thursday. The series' return to R-rating brought out a crowd that was 65% over the age of 25.
Last weekend’s top film, Identity Thief [IDTHF] nearly repeated with another $27.9 million. The comedy has already banked $75.1 million.
The Nicholas Sparks adaptation Safe Haven [SAFHV] opened in third place with $25.2 million over the four-day weekend and $34.0 million since placing first on Valentine’s Day. As expected the romance skewed 70% female and 68% under the age of 25.
Escape from Planet Earth [ESCPE] grossed $21.0 million through the holiday weekend to take the fourth spot. The animated release was the only family film in the top 12.
Beautiful Creatures [BTCRT] debuted sixth overall with a disappointing $8.9 million over the long weekend. Attracting an audience that was 67%, the fantasy romance $11.5 million since opening on Thursday.
