Despite finishing atop the weekend box office, the sci-fi sequel Star Trek Into Darkness [TREK2] vastly underperformed with an estimated $70.6 million weekend and $84.1 million since opening on Thursday. That barely topped 2009's Star Trek which had a $75.2 million weekend and $79.2 million in its first four days. Despite the goodwill to J.J. Abrams' [JABRA] reboot, the audience for the sci-fi franchise did not expand as many had expected four years later. The fanbase remained older men with 64% male and 73% over the age of 25. Early moviegoers gave Into Darkness an A Cinemascore, but word of mouth may not be good when Trekkies learns it's mostly a retread of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.
After 2 weeks in first place, Iron Man 3 [IRNM3] finished second with $35.2 million to bring its total to $337.1 milion.
The Great Gatsby [GATSB] fell 53.2% in its second weekend to $23.4 million. Baz Luhrmann's 3D party has already brought in $90.2 million.
Pain & Gain [PAING] curled another $3.1 million to pump its total to $46.6 million.
