Leading the Memorial Day weekend to its highest box office ever, the action sequel Fast & Furious 6 [FAST6] revved up an estimated $120.0 million over the 4-day holiday to score the fourth best Memorial weekend opening ever. The sixth installment also banked a franchise best $96.8 million from Friday to Sunday. The diverse cast attracted a diverse audience to the street racing series that's still growing.
The Hangover Part III [HNOV3] finished a distant second with $51.2 million from Friday to Monday, and $63.0 million since opening on Thursday. Moviegoers got over The Hangover franchise as the third film opened less than half of Part II over the same stretch last year.
Star Trek: Into Darkness [TREK2] dropped to third place with $47.0 million over the holiday weekend to bring its total to $155.8 million. The 3-day portion was down 47% from its debut.
The animated Epic [EPIC] took in $42.6 million to open at the fourth spot.
