12 years after the release of Monsters, Inc., the animated prequel Monsters University [MONS2] grossed an estimated $82.0 million to lead the weekend box office. The debut is the second highest for Pixar behind only Toy Story 3. The audience was 60% under the age of 25. With excellent word of mouth, Monsters University should enjoy a long summer.
World War Z [WWARZ] finished second with a better than expected $66.0 million. The opening is Brad Pitt's [BPITT] best topping Mr. and Mrs. Smith's $50.3 million. The zombie actioner drew a crowd that was 67% over the age of 25.
Last weekend's champ Man of Steel [SUPR2] fell 65% to $41.2 million. The Superman reboot has collected $210.0 million.
This Is The End [JSVSA] took fourth with $13 million, off just 37% from its opening last week. The comedy stands at $57.8 million.
Expanding to 650 theaters, The Bling Ring [BLINR] grabbed $2.0 million to chart at number 11.
