With an estimated $82.5 million weekend and $142.1 million since opening on Wednesday, Despicable Me 2 [DESM2] secured the biggest five-day opening ever for an animated film. The Universal sequel attracted an audience that was 60% female and 55% under the age of 25.
The Lone Ranger [LONER] flopped at a distant second with just $29.4 million for the weekend and $48.9 million in its first five days. The mega-budgeted western appealed to an older crowd that was 57% males, and 68% over the age of 25, including 24% over the age of 50.
The Heat [THEAT] finished third with $25 million, off just 36% from its opening weekend. The buddy comedy has banked $86.4 million.
After two weeks at number one, Monsters University [MONS2] fell to fourth place with $19.6 million. Meanwhile, World War Z [WWARZ] took the fifth spot with $18.2 milion.
White House Down [WHDWN] declined 46% to $13.5 million in its second weekend. The action comedy has earned $50.5 million.
Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain [KHLME] tallied $10.1 million from 876 theaters to chart eighth overall. The concert film has grossed $17.5 million since debuting on Wednesday.
