In a summer of expensive tentpole failures, the low-budget The Conjuring [CNJUR] topped the weekend box office with an estimated $41.4 million, the best ever for a R-rated horror film. The audience, which was 59% over the age of 25, gave the film a CinemaScore of A-.
After two weeks at the top, Despicable Me 2 [DESM2] dropped to second with $25.1 million. The animated sequel has accumulated $276.2 million.
Turbo [TURB1] finished in third place with $21.5 million. The animated film has earned $31.2 million since opening on Wednesday.
Grown Ups 2 [GRWN2] tallied $20.0 million to take the fourth spot. The comedy sequel dropped 52% in second weekend to bring its total to $79.5 million.
RED 2 [RED2] debuted in fifth place at $18.5 million, less than the first RED.
Pacific Rim [PACRM] tumbled 57% in its sophomore session to $16.0 million. The robot on monster actioner has banked $68.2 million.
R.I.P.D. [RIPD] was DOA in seventh place with just $12.8 million.
