In a crowded weekend featuring four new wide releases, Elysium [ELYSM] came out on top with an estimated $30.5 million. Despite a bigger budget and Matt Damon in the lead, the sci-fi film failed to surpass the debut of director Neil Bomkamp's previous District 9. Males made up 61% of the audience.
We're the Millers [WEMIL] took a better than expected $26.6 million to open in second place. The comedy has grossed $38.0 million in its first five days and should enjoy great word of mouth.
Continuing the trend of underperforming family films, Planes [PLANE] finished third with $22.5 million. The Cars spin-off was originally produced by DisneyToons as a straight to home video.
Bringing up the rear of the four new films, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters [PJAC2] tallied $14.6 mllion and $23.5 million since opening on Wednesday.
Last weekend's top film 2 Guns rounded out the top five with $11.1 million, down 59% from its debut. Meanwhile, The Smurfs 2 [SMRF2] declined 46% in its second weekend to $9.5 million.
