With the three other new wide releases bombing with audiences, the weekend box office was easily won by Lee Daniels' The Butler [BUTLR] with an estimated $25.0 million. The historical drama appealed to older women as the crowd was 60% female and 76% over the age of 35. The crowd-pleasing awards contender should enjoy long legs through September.
We're the Millers [WEMIL] remained in the second spot at $17.8 million. The comedy declined just 33% in its sophomore session.
Last weekend's top film Elysium [ELYSM] dropped 54% to $13.6 million to finish in third place.
Kick-Ass 2 [KCKA2] opened fourth overall with just $13.57 million, short of the original's $19.8 million. The action sequel drew an audience that was 63% male and 58% under 25.
Planes [PLANE] trailed off 41% to $13.1 million while Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters [PJAC2] slid 42% to $8.4 million.
Jobs [JOBS] debuted at seventh with $6.7 million. The biopic attracted moviegoers that were 53% males and 59% over 25.
Paranoia [PRNOA] tallied just $3.5 million to finish outside the top 12.
