After a nine year absence from the silver screen, Vin Diesel's Riddick [RIDC2] earned an estimated $18.7 million to lead the weekend box office. The opening fell short of 2004's Chronicles of Riddick's $24.3 million. The sci-fi sequel connected with Diesel's fanbase at 59% males and 37% Hispanics.
Lee Daniels' The Butler [BUTLR] stepped down to second place with $8.9 million. The historical drama has served up $91.9 million.
Expanding to 717 theaters after one week of limited release, Instructions Not Included [ININC] grossed $8.1 million to finish third. The Spanish-language comedy has banked $20.3 million.
One Direction: This Is Us [ODCM] tumbled 74% in its second weekend to place sixth with $4.1 million. The concert film stands at $24.0 million.
