Connecting with older adult moviegoers, the kidnapping drama Prisoners [PRSNS] seized an estimated $21.4 million to lead the weekend box office. The audience was 52% female and 72% over the age of 25. With excellent reviews and word of mouth, Prisoners should exercise strong legs going forth.
Last week's top film Insidious: Chapter 2 [NSID2] finished second with $14.5 million. The horror sequel dropped 64% in its second weekend to bring it total to $60.9 million.
The Family [TFMLY] dropped 50% in its second weekend to $7.0 million. The comedy has stashed $25.6 million.
The sleeper hit Instructions Not Included [ININC] slipped just 17% in third weekend of wide release adding $5.7 million to up its total to $34.3 million.
Battle of the Year [BATYR] placed fifth with just $5.0 million in its debut, while the 3D re-release of Wizard of Oz [WOZ3D] banked $3.0 million.
