The remake of a horror classic about a telekinetic teenager will attempt to defy Gravity [GRVTY], which has maintained a firm grip on moviegoers at the box office. After holding an exceptional 23% last weekend, the 3D film is unlikely to lose more than 30% in its third weekend. Gravity looks to grab about $32 million, which should be enough to retain the top spot.
Based on the Stephen King novel, Carrie [CARIE] was first adapted into the hit 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek. Chloe Grace Moretz [CMORE] takes over the title role in the modern remake co-starring Julianne Moore [JMOOR] as her over-protective mother. Horror films have out-performed expectations this year and Sony’s R-rated film is surprisingly the only horror release this October. Playing at 3157 theaters, Carrie may knock down $26 million.
With excellent reviews and word of mouth, Captain Phillips [CDUTY] should continue to attract older adult moviegoers. The ripped-from-the-headlines thriller could decline around 35% to $17 million.
Slyvester Stallone [SSTAL] and Arnold Schwarzenegger [ASCHW] team up once again for the R-rated actioner Escape Plan [ESCPL]. Summit’s marketing has been unable to explain the overly complicated story on what should be a simple prison break movie. Their last two solo efforts, The Last Stand opened to $6.3 million while Bullet to the Head debuted with $4.5 million. Locked into 2883 theaters, Escape Plan may break out with $8 million.
Tracking with even less buzz is the DreamWorks drama The Fifth Estate [T5EST] about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The R-rated film failed to generate favorable reviews needed to attract the sophisticated audience. Exposed to 1769 theaters, The Fifth Estate may reveal just $4 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
