Storming into the weekend box office with an estimated $38.5 million, Lone Survivor [LSURV] exceeded all expectations to easily take first place. The true-life story of military heroism connected with both male and female moviegoers, especially in Middle America.
In second place, Frozen [FROZE.BW] grossed another $15.1 million to bring its total to $317.7 million.
The Wolf of Wall Street [TWOWS] moved up a slot to third place at $9.0 million, while American Hustle [AMBUL] tied for fourth with The Legend of Hercules [HRCLB] at $8.6 million.
In their first wide expansions, August: Osage County [AUGOC] finished seventh with $7.3 million, Her [HERSJ] took eleventh with $5.4 million, while Inside Llewyn Davis [INSLD] was outside the top 12 at $1.9 million.
