Setting a new box office record for the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, the comedy Ride Along [RDLON] banked $41.6 million from Friday to Sunday and an estimated $48.1 million over the 4-day holiday weekend. 2008's Cloverfield held the previous mark at $40.1 million and $46.1 million respectively. African-Americans made up 50% of the audience, which was also 54% over the age of 25.
Last weekend's top film Lone Survivor [LSURV] slipped to second place with $26.4 million. The action drama ha earned $78.4 million after two wide weekends.
The Nut Job [NUTJB] finished in third place with $25.3 million over the long weekend. The animated film becomes Open Road's biggest opener.
Jack Ryan: Shadow: Recruit [JRYAN] bombed with just $18.0 million to debut fourth overall. The franchise reboot failed to attract an audience outside its older fanbase. A whopping 85% were over the age of 25.
The horror film Devil's Due [DVLDU] opened in seventh place with $9.3 million.
