Seven years after 300 blew the gates off the box office, its 3D sequel 300: Rise of an Empire [XERXE] returned to the top with an estimated $45.1 million. The stylized Greek epic attracted an audience that was 63% male, and 3D accounted for 63% of the receipts.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman [MRPBS] opened in second place with $32.5 million. Families made up 80% of the moviegoers.
Last weekend's champ Non-Stop [NONST] finished third at $15.4 million, down 47% from its debut.
Son of God [SOGOD] tumbled 61% in its second weekend to $10 million.
