Kicking off a new franchise based on a YA novel series, Divergent [DVRGN] led the weekend box office with an estimated $56.0 million. The sci-fi film attracted an audience that was 69% female and 50% over the age of 25.
Muppets Most Wanted [MUPE2] opened in second place with an underwhelming $16.5 million.
Last weekend's top film Mr. Peabody and Sherman [MRPBS] finished third with $11.7 million to bring its total to $81.0 million.
Need for Speed [NFSPD] was down 56% in its second weekend to $7.8 million and sixth place.
