Appealing to moms and their daughters, Disney's live-action fantasy Maleficent [MALEF] topped the weekend box office with an estimated $70.0 million. The audience was 60% female and 30% under the age of 18. The retelling of Sleeping Beauty should have legs against its male-targeted competitors.
Last weekend's champ X-Men: Days of Future Past [XMEN5] finished second with $32.6 million, down 64% from its debut. The superhero sequel stands at $162.1 million.
A Million Ways to Die in the West [MWTDW] opened with $17.1 million at the third spot. The R-rated comedy attracted a crowd that was 55% male and 72% over the age of 25.
In fourth place, Godzilla [GODZL] stomped $12.2 million to bring its total to $174.7 million.
Blended [BLEND] declined 41% off its opening weekend to $8.4 million. The family comedy sits at $29.6 million.
