Boosted by excellent reviews in a lackluster summer blockbuster season, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes [APES2] exceeded expectations with an estimated $73.0 million. The sci-fi sequel attracted an audience that was 58% males and 55% over the age of 25.
After two weeks at the top, Transformers: Age of Extinction [TFRM4] dropped down to second with $16.5 million, bringing its total across $209.3 million.
Tammy [TAMMY] slid 40% in its second weekend to $12.9 million for the third spot. The comedy has earned $57.4 million.
Earth to Echo [ECHO] took in $5.5 million, down just 34% in its second weekend, while Deliver Us From Evil [BWRNT] tumbled 52% in its second weekend to $4.7 million.
In its first week of wide release, Begin Again [CSSYL] charted ninth overall with $2.9 million.
