Three new wide releases were no match for the reigning Dawn of the Planet of the Apes [APES2] as the sci-fi sequel remained on top of the weekend box office with an estimated $36.0 million. The film dropped 50% in its second weekend to advance its total to $139.0 million.
The Purge: Anarchy [PURG2] opened in second place with a respectable $28.4 million since the sequel featured a different cast from the original that debuted with $34.1 million. The thriller sequel attracted an audience that was 52% females and 61% under the age of 25, while 36% of the moviegoers were Hispanics.
Planes: Fire & Rescue [PLNE2] landed at the third spot with $18.0 million, down from last year's $22 million launch for Planes.
The comedy Sex Tape [SEXTP] earned an underwhelming $15.0 million to open fourth overall.
