Swooping in to save a lackluster summer box office season, Guardians of the Galaxy [GOTGX] banked an estimated $94.0 million to record a new opening weekend high for August. The Marvel space opera attracted an audience that was 56% male and 55% over the age of 25. With excellent word of mouth, Guardians should have good legs for a blockbuster.
Lucy [LUCY] dropped down to second place with $18.3 million. The actioner slipped 58% in its second weekend to bring its total to $79.6 million.
Get on Up [GSOUL] charted at number three with $14.0 million. The James Brown biopic connected with its target audience as 70% of the moviegoers were African-American, 63% female and 95% over the age of 25.
Hercules [HERCL] shrunk 64% in its second weekend to $10.7 million and fourth overall. The fantasy epic stands at $52.3 million.
Expanding to 729 theaters, A Most Wanted Man [AMWM] grossed $3.3 million.
