20 years after completing a live-action trilogy on the big screen, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles [TMNT1] returns with a big budgeted reboot using the latest motion-capture technology to bring the heroes in a half-shell to life. Paramount reunited Megan Fox [MEFOX] with producer Michael Bay in hopes their Transformers magic will rub off on the Ninja Turtles. Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello and Raphael have remained popular through animated series, videogames and toys. Trailers for the PG-13 rated actioner are what one would expect and should bring out the boys from kids to teenagers to nostalgic adults. Fandango reports advance ticket sales are pacing ahead of G.I. Joe: Retaliation’s $40.5 million and G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra’s $54.7 million. Shelling out in 3845 theaters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could shock with $46 million.
Despite being beloved by audiences, Guardians of the Galaxy [GOTGX] is unlikely to be immune from the typical, frontloaded blockbuster drop-off. Guardians of the Galaxy could decline 55% in its second outing to $42 million.
Nearly 20 years after Twister struck theaters, Warner Bros. has issued a new tornado film Into the Storm [CATE6]. Lacking any starpower, the PG-13 rated disaster film has been marketed solely on its special effects, which don't appear to be all that special in the trailers. Landing in 3434 theaters, Into the Storm could capture $16 million.
Helen Mirren [HMIRR] toplines the culinary drama The Hundred-Foot Journey [THFTJ] about a restaurant rivalry in a French village. Even with Disney’s marketing, the PG-rated film may be too foreign for American tastes. Appealing primarily older women, The Hundred-Foot Journey may take in $9 million from 2023 locations.
The fifth installment Step Up All In [STUP5] is a semi-all-star edition of the street dancing series. Despite bringing back some familiar faces, the PG-13 rated film is unlikely to reverse a franchise-in-decline that Summit picked up from Disney. The previous sequel Step Up Revolution debuted two years ago at $11.7 million. Breaking in 2072 theaters, Step Up All In may hit $8.5 million.
The James Brown biopic Get On Up [GSOUL] could hold 60% of its debut and finish with $8 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
