Mr. Box Office Consistency Denzel Washington delivered again as The Equalizer [EQLIZ] scored an estimated $35.0 million to debut at number one. The R-rated film appealed to an audience that was 52% males and 65% over the age of 30.
Last weekend's champ The Maze Runner [MAZER] slipped to second with $17.5 million. The YA dystopian sci-fi film decayed 46% from its opening to bring its total to $58.0 million.
The Boxtrolls [BOXTR] debuted third overall with $17.3 million. The stop-motion animated film topped Laika's previous efforts Coraline's $16.8 million and ParaNorman's $14.1 million.
At the fourth spot, This Is Where I Leave You [TWILU] slipped 39% in its second weekend to $7.0 million.
A Walk Among the Tombstone [WKTMB] tumbled 67% to $4.2 million and seventh place.
