Two holiday season blockbusters blasted off this weekend and Big Hero 6 [BHERO] touched down in first with an estimated $56.2 million. The Disney animated superhero film took 29% of ticket sales from 3D. Families made up 72% of the audience, which was split evenly between the sexes.
Interstellar [NTSTL] opened in second with $50.0 million over the weekend. The sci-fi folm banked 26% of the box office from 368 IMAX theaters, while other large-format screens accounted for an additional 11%. The audience was 52% male and 75% 25 years or older.
In its sixth week of release, Gone Girl [GONEG.BW] finished third with $6.1 million to bring its total to $145.4 million.
After 2 weeks at the top, Ouija [OUIJA] dropped to fourth with $6.0 million. The horror film has earned $43.5 million.
Nightcrawler [NTCRW] tumbled 50% in its second weekend to $5.3 million and seventh overall.
