Although the first two The Hunger Games opened over $150 million, the third installment The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 [HGAM3] topped the weekend box office with an estimated $123.0 million. The debut is still the highest of the year and number 15 of all times. Some fans apparently chose not to endorse the splitting of the last and least liked book into two films. The audience was 60% female and 52% under the age of 25.
Big Hero 6 [BHERO] remained in second place with $20.1 million to bring its total to $135.7 million.
Interstellar [NTSTL] stayed at the third spot with $15.1 million to advance its sum to $120.7 million.
Last weekend champ Dumb and Dumber To [DUMB3] dropped to fourth with $13.8 million, down 61% from its opening. The comedy sequel has earned $57.5 million.
