Closing out the fantasy trilogy wiith a bang, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies [HOBT3] topped the weekend box office with an estimated $56.2 million, totaling $90.6 million since opening on Wednesday. 3D screens accounted for nearly half the tally. The audience was 60% over the age of 25.
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb [NMUS3] opened in second place with $17.3 million, well below the first two installments.
Annie [ANNIE] debuted with $16.3 million for the third spot. Family moviegoers madeup 76% of the audience.
Last weekend's top film, Exodus: Gods and Kings [EXODU] tumbled 67% in its second weekend to $8.1 million. The Biblical epix has earned $38.9 million.
Expanding wide to 1061 theaters, Wild [WILD1] finished sixth at $3.8 million.
