Shocking the Hollywood industry by doubling even the loftiest expectations, American Sniper [AMSNP] hit an estimated $105.3 million over the 4-day holiday weeekend. The opening smashed the previous mark of $48.6 million set last year by Ride Along. The 3-day gross of $89.5 million also tops Passion of the Christ's $83.8 million.
Opening at a distant second, Paddinton [PADTN] earned $25.2 million to edge out The Wedding Ringer [WEDRN] at $24.5 million.
Last weekend's top film, Taken 3 [TAKE3] tumbled to fourth with $17.4 million, while Selma [SELMA] rounded out the top five with $11.5 million.
Blackhat [CYBER] completely bombed with just $4.4 million over the long weekend.
