Scoring the best second wide weekend ever for an R-rated film, American Sniper [AMSNP] crossed $200.1 million with an estimated $64.4 million. The war biopic slipped just 28% from last weekend, the best of any film opening above $85 million. Word of mouth will continue to bring non-tradition moviegoers to American Sniper.
The Boy Next Door [BOYND] debuted in second place with $15.0 million. Connecting with its target demographic, the audience was 45% Latinos, 71% female, and 65% over the age of 25.
Paddington [PADTN] stayed in third at $12.4 million, down 35% from its debut. The bear has banked $40.1 million.
The Wedding Ringer [WEDRN] dropped 47% to $11.0 million and fourth overall. The comedy has earned $39.5 million.
Strange Magic [STMGC] grossed $5.5 million to open at the seventh spot. Mortdecai [MRTDC] crashed and burned at ninth with only $4.1 million.
