Despite getting off to a slower start than Divergent on Friday, the sequel The Divergent Series: Insurgent [DVRG2] caught up to its predecessor and earned an estimated $54.0 milion to lead the weekend box office. The audience was 60% female and 55% under the age of 25, which is broader yet younger than the original film last year.
Last week's crown holder Cinderella [CINDE] slipped 49% to $34.5 million. The fantasy has amassed $122.0 million.
Run All Night [ALNIT] finished third with $5.1 million, down 54% from its debut. The actioner has banked $19.7 million.
The Gunman [PGUNM] hit $5.0 million to open at the fourth spot. The Sean Penn starrer skewed 58% male and 91% over the age of 25.
Do You Believe? [DYBLV] bowed in sixth place wth $4.0 million.
