Before the Age of Ultron takes over next week, the box office may enjoy a brief The Age of Adaline [ADALN]. Blake Lively [BLIVE] stars in the PG-13 rated fantasy romance about a woman who hasn’t aged in 100 years and thus unable to find true love. Lionsgate hasn’t produced many romances, but has succeeded in reaching female moviegoers with YA adaptations. The marketing campaign has been prevalent in targeting the desired demographics. With decent reviews and Harrison Ford [HFORD] providing additional starpower, The Age of Adaline should bring out its target audience. Bowing in 2991 theaters, The Age of Adaline could take home $15 million in a close race for first place.
After a strong first two weeks, Furious 7 [FAST7] began to quickly lose steam during its third. The sequel could still take the checkered flag for a fourth straight time with $15 million.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 [MALC2] connected with a broad audience looking for a dumb laugh. The family-friendly film may decline 45% in its second weekend to about $13 million.
Unfriended [CYBRN] is headed for the hard sophomore fall typical of a horror film. A 55% drop-off would put Unfriended around $7 million.
After 2 weeks of stellar returns in limited release, Ex Machina [EXMCH] expands wide to 1300 theaters. The R-rated sci-fi film has been called the year’s best thus far by many critics and looks to appeal to adults looking for smart, though-provoking fare. Ex Machina could turn out $6 million.
Open Road targets Christian moviegoers with the drama Little Boy [LTBOY] set during WWII. The supposedly family-friendly film has been saddled with a PG-13 rating and poor reviews. There’s little buzz for a release which has been delayed a few times. Little Boy may collect $3 million from just 1035 theaters.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
