June gloom has arrived in Hollywood, but the weekend box office should shine brightly. Melissa McCarthy [MMCCA] plays Spy [SCOPR] in the R-rated action comedy spoofing the likes of James Bond. The Fox release reunites McCarthy with director Paul Feig [PFEIG] from Bridesmaids and The Heat, the latter of which debuted two years ago at $39.1 million. Spy will probably fall short of that mark since there has not been any advance ticket sales comparison with The Heat. The marketing campaign has been funny enough, and the concept will draw a broader audience than last year's Tammy, which debuted with $21.6 million. Co-star Jason Statham [JSTAT] should also help bringin male action fans. Showing in 3711 theaters, Spy could uncover $36 million.
After its better than expected debut, San Andreas [SANDR] is likely to experience an aftershock drop of more than 50% to around $26 million.
Focus targets horror fans with the Blumhouse-produced prequel Insidious: Chapter 3 [NSID3]. Chapter 2 opened to a whopping $40.3 million in September 2013, but this third film lacks previous stars Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson. The PG-13 rated Insidious: Chapter 3 should still be able to attract at least half of those moviegoers and bring in $23 million from over 3000 locations.
Four years after ending its run on HBO, Entourage [ENTOR] finally continues the story of four bros living the Hollywood dream on the big screen. The R-rated comedy opened on Wednesday and took in $5.4 million, $2.2 million of which came on Tuesday night. Reviews have been mixed, but that’s not going to matter to the fans of what is essentially the male version of Sex and the City. Screening in 3058 theaters, Entourage may rope in $14 million over the weekend.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
