CG dinosaurs will once again rule the box office as Jurassic World [JURA4] opens its doors 14 years after the previous installment. While the last two sequels were set on the second island of Sorna, Jurassic World is set on the same island Nublar as the original Jurassic Park where the dinosaur theme park has now been operational for years. Bryce Dallas Howard [BDHOW] plays its vice president, while Chris Pratt [CPRAT] plays a raptor trainer. All hell breaks loose when a newly created super-dinosaur escapes on a killing rampage. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the new PG-13 rated film harkens back to the beloved 1993 original. The premise of dinosaurs running amok and eating tourists has finally been fulfilled. Universal has struck at nostalgia to build up anticipation among fans of all ages. Advance ticket sales indicate an opening weekend of at least $100 million, while trackings point even higher. Opening in 4273 theaters, Jurassic World could admit more than $120 million.
While Spy [SCOPR] underperformed expectations in its debut, strong reviews and positive word of mouth should extend its legs. Spy could hold 55% in its sophomore mission and finish a distant second at $16 million.
With competition from Jurassic World, San Andreas [SANDR] may register a slight $12 million for its third weekend.
As with most horror sequels, Insidious: Chapter 3 [NSID3] is likely to drop 55% in its second session to around $10 million
Entourage [ENTOR] waited too long to cash in and lost its status. The Hollywood fantasy looks to fade quickly to around $4.5 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
