After debuting in second for the first time in Pixar history, Inside Out [NMIND] has a chance to ascend to the top in its sophomore session. The last original Pixar film Brave dropped 48% in its second weekend, but it’s not as universally praised as Inside Out. A better comparison would be the beloved Up from 2009, which declined 35%. A similar decay would put Inside Out at about $58 million.
After its record setting first and second weekend, Jurassic World [JURA4] is unlikely to top Avatar’s $68.5 million for best third weekend ever. Jurassic World should continue to pace Marvel’s The Avengers’ $55.6 million and come in at around $56 million.
Seth MacFarlane [SMACF] and Mark Wahlberg [MWAHL] return in the R-rated comedy Ted 2 [TED2] exactly 3 years after Ted surprised the industry with a $54.4 million debut. However, MacFarlane’s last film Million Ways to Die in the West bombed miserable. Will the novelty of a foul-mouthed teddy bear wear off the second time around or will new bits like Tom Brady bring out fans of the original? Universal should be about to count on the young adult male demographic. Lighting up 3442 theaters, Ted 2 could smoke $50 million.
Warner Bros. targets families with the doggie tale Max [MAX1] about a U.S. military dog adopted by the family of his handler who died in combat. Lacking any starpower, the PG-rated drama may have trouble standing out in a field crowded with summer blockbusters. Max looks to sniff out $11 million from 1855 theaters.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
