Two new entrants into the weekend box office race both came in slower than expected. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials [MAZE2] finished first with an estimated $30.3 million, short of the $32.5 million opening of the first The Mazde Runner exactly a year ago. The YA sci-fi sequel found an audience that was 53% female and 65% under the age of 25.
Black Mass [BMASS] opened in second with $23.4 million. The crime drama skewed 61% males and 80%over the age of 25, The word of mouth did not match the critical hype.
The Visit [SUNDW] finished third at $11.3 million, down 55% from its debut. The horror film stands at $42.3 million.
Last week's top film The Perfect Guy [TPGUY] dropped to fourth with $9.7 million. The thriller tumbled 63% to bring its total to $41.4 million.
Everest [EVRST] claimed $7.6 million in its limited opening on 546 IMAX theaters.
In its wide expansion to 1061 theaters, Grandma [GRNMA] took in $1.6 million for the tenth spot.
The faith-based drama Captive [CPTIV] bombed with just $1.4 million.
