Sony continues its recent winning streak as its animated sequel Hotel Transylvania 2 [HTRN2] booked an estimated $47.5 million to set a new opening weekend record for September. The first film held the previous record of $42.5 milion. The family film brought out an audience that was 59% female and 60% under 25.
The Intern [INTRN] debuted in second place with $18.2 million. The audience for the workplace comedy skewed 89% over 25.
Last week's champ Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials [MAZE2] declined 54% to $14.0 million and third overall. The sci-fi sequel stands at $51.7 million.
Everest [EVRST] grossed $13.1 million in its expansion to wide release. The disaster film has earned $23.1 million.
Black Mass [BMASS] finished fifth with $11.5 million. The crime drama dropped 49% in its second weekend to bring its total to $42.6 million.
Debuting at number nine, The Green Inferno [GRNFR] took in $3.5 million.
Pawn Sacrifice [PAWNS] scored just $1.0 million in its expansion to 781 theaters.
