Buoyed by free publicity and excellent word of mouth, The Martian [MARTN] blasted off with an estimated $55.0 million, within striking distance of the October record of $55.8 million set by Gravity two years ago.
Last weekend's champ Hotel Transylvania 2 [HTRN2] secured second with $33.0 million. The animated sequel decayed just 32% in its second weekend to bring its total to $90.5 million.
Expanding to wide release, Sicario [SICAR] took in $12.1 million to take third place. The crime drama has secured $15.1 million.
The Intern [INTRN] finished fourth at $11.6 million, down just 34% from its opening weekend.
Debuting on 448 preminum large-format screens, The Walk [TWALK] managed just $1.6 million.
